New funding received from Vinnova “Innovativa startups”

Nordic BioEngineering AB are thrilled and excited about receiving new funding from Vinnova and their program “Innovative Startups“. With this funding we will be able continue to our development of a new bio-remediation process, using Archaea, to break down PAH in soil and sediment.

The purpose of the project is to validate a new biological (biomimic) treatment method for soil and sediment that are heavily contaminated with PAH (polyaromatic hydrocarbons or polyaromatics). This will be done by working closely together with two clients. Thus, we will validate the new remediation process with large scale test in two actual cases.

The overall objective of the project is to reduce the PAH values so that after the treatment, the polluted soil and sediment can be re-classified from hazardous waste to non-hazardous waste.
By using our new method, we can increase the speed of nature’s ow n ability to break down contaminants by stimulating biological activity and controlling the system to provide optimum conditions for the remediation process.

Expected properties are to show that the new method is cost-effective, better for health and safety for remediation personnel than other methods, energy-efficient and climate-friendly. Cost savings are based on low energy costs, lower taxes on landfills, reduced management of hazardous waste and reduced use of chemicals.

BIOMIMIC – on the way to a sustainable metal supply

With the escalating demand of metals in an increasing global population, Europe is confronted with the challenge to secure a sustainable metal supply. Lack of cost effective technology to extract heavy metals from hazardous, metal-rich fly ash collected in complex municipal solid waste streams has escalated societal challenges due to environmental as well as monetary costs. Fly ash could instead be a resource for metal recovery. Another challenging waste stream is hazardous waste from alumina production.

The BIOMIMIC project addresses key problem areas of complex waste processing. The primary objective is to create and validate new biotechnological metallurgical methods that have the potential to concentrate metals in dilute solutions while leaving the residue free from toxic substances. It will be achieved through technology development of biotechnological methods pertaining to treatment of waste streams.

The project is coordinated by RISE and funded by Vinnova (Sweden), Bundesministerium fur Bildung und Forschung (Germany) and Geological Survey (Ireland).

Nordic BioEngineering AB is one partner in this project, and our role is to be work package leader for the development of biotechnology trials in lab, based on our microbial products and of sulfate reducing bacteria.

The objective of the work package is to increase technology readiness level of sulfate bioreduction and metal precipitation of the relevant metal solution from waste incinerations plant from three to five by validating the technology in a relevant environment.

The objective is to develop a microbial consortia, use innovative reactor design and use readily available waste carbon source to reduce the cost. Validation in lab / pilot scale mimicking industrial conditions is also included in this work.

Pilot tests for new bioremediation method for PAH-contaminated soil

We are doing pilot tests with Ragn-Sells AB in Häradsudden, Norrköping, to develop a modular and mobile solution for treatment of PAH-contaminated soil, by using our microbial products with Archaea.

The aim of the project is to develop an innovative and cost-efficient biological treatment technology that is fully based on natural degradation processes of contaminants and to stimulate this method through mixture with renewable resources (e.g. waste from the forestry and pulp industry).

Initial results have shown that breakdown of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbon (PAH) is between 40-60% in the contaminated soils. Further investigations have to be done on the mixing process and to optimize the blending facility as well as to ensure the efficiency and compare the cost of alternative treatment options in large scale.

Remediation time to reach an acceptable level of PAH so that the masses can be put on landfill for non-hazardous waste

The pilot tests have been financed by Vinnova through the program Innovative startups.

We use microbes specifically selected for their ability to consume fuels and oil, both biochemically and physically. These microbes recycle simple, complex and chlorinated hydrocarbons into natural compounds.

Our products effectively remove both surface stains and embedded stains from spilled petroleum products on concrete, asphalt, garage floors, driveways, shop floors, loading docks, fueling areas, parking lots and oil storage areas. We inoculate the contaminants with microbial organisms and oxygen catalysts for a complete biodegradation. Our formulas are also effective for washing soil, sand, gravel and loose rocks, and for cleaning heavy machinery.

    For large to medium soil or water remediation projects.

    Formula I contains a high concentration blend from communities of aerobic and microaerophilic microorganisms, blended into a dense absorbent powder. Our proprietary mixture contains microbes that have been selected from worldwide natural soil and water sources.

    Formula I can be effectively used in a wide range of environments as either a soil amendment, or for treating crude oil, fuels, oil field waste, wastewater plants and chlorinated compounds in water and soils.

    In a study conducted by LSU for the Deepwater Horizon response team, Formula I was proven the most effective of all products in reducing the total volume of oil, reducing Alkanes by 99.9% and PAHs by 98.5%.

    For treating chlorinated hydrocarbons in soil or water projects.

    Formula CL contains a blend of single cells ranging in size from 1 to 10 microns. These microbes have been selected from worldwide natural soil and water sources, chosen for their affinity to degrade for chlorinated hydrocarbons molecules. They are not genetically altered or modified in any way.

    Chlorinated hydrocarbons are organic molecules characterized by the presence of at least one chlorine atom bonded to a carbon atom.

    Compounds which contain these molecules are Trichloroethylene and Perchloroethylene, commonly used to make industrial solvents.

    For treating oil in grease traps and oil water separators.

    Using microbes to digest oil in your oil water separators is a proven technique to minimize the oil content in effluent and sludge and to reduce the clean-out frequency. Microbes added to an oil water separators break down petroleum products suspended or dissolved in the wastewater, floating oil, or sludge.

    Facilities using bioremediation have eliminated wastewater violations and have reported reducing their sludge petroleum content by more than 80%.

    Reducing the petroleum content can lower the regulatory status of the sludge, which will affect the required disposal method and disposal costs.
  • add_circle_outline Piranha
    For use on oil spills in pipelines, oil fields and refineries.

    Piranha is designed to degrade Alkanes and PAH’s in sites that have been impacted by crude oil and refined petroleum spills. It is packaged into a highly concentrated dense powder which is activated by water at your convenience and on your schedule. The water used can be either salt, fresh or brackish.

    After Piranha is applied to a spill, it immediately contains and lock up the spilled material, and then with the addition of water activates the microbes to breakdown, degrade, and destroy the oil and or fuel. This allows for rapid on-site treatment to save time, money and resources.

    Piranha restores balance in the environment by converting fossil fuel hydrocarbons into beneficial and nontoxic byproducts. These byproducts are used by plants, fish, and wildlife as a source of energy. Areas where spills have affected the environment can be safely restored to normal.
